15.05.2008Остров Samuj, Thailand
This publication we open big "series" of reviews about resorts of Thailand, some kind of “the Encyclopedia of young marmots” for travellers on this country. Today we will tell about island Samuj - a corner quiet, rasslabennoj lives.
The island Samuj (Koh Samui) is the third on size island of Thailand, it is located at east coast, in the middle of a gulf, and is an archipelago part, where islands Tao (Koh Tao) and Phangan (Koh Pha-Ngan) also enter.
Inhabitants Hajnana, island which now belongs to China were the first poselentsami on island. poselentsy began to grow up cocoes on the coconut farms, and till now on Samue collect the big crops of cocoes. However now the basic source of incomes for inhabitants of island is a tourism where they earn much more, than sale of cocoes. Inhabitants of island name themselves chao Samui, instead of tajtsami, at them the culture and the kitchen which is distinct from other islands.
The island Samuj became popular among tourists from the West in the beginning of 80 years, and now during the high season here it is a lot of to people (a tourist season on Samue - from December till February, and also July and August). From July till October on island there can be rains, but as a whole weather favorable. Strong winds on island can be from October till January. At this time on island it is difficult to find a free hotel accommodation as the island is a popular place among tourists, and unlike more developed resorts of Thailand, here quieter and weakened rest. On island it is a lot of the beaches, some of them are developed more than others, therefore on island it is possible to find silence and lonely beaches.
With the big flow of tourists it is necessary to reflect on island wildlife management. Therefore restriction on height of constructions - not above has been entered, than height of palm trees, laws on restriction of noise and reduction of quantity of dust on island also are passed.
If on a beach to you it becomes boring, you always will find, than to be engaged. On island there are some interesting temples, meditation courses sometimes are spent specially for Europeans in temple Wat Pang Bua, and in temple Wat Khunaram you can see mumifitsirovannyh monks. In temple Wat Phra Yai located in the north of island, there is a huge statue of the Buddha, and in temple Wat Samret there is a marble statue of the sitting Buddha.
On island also there are two falls: Nam Tok Hin Lat which it is possible to reach from Natona, and Tok Na Muang which is in the island middle. At the second falls is enough big "pool" in which it is possible to bathe.
On island Samuj also there is an airport, and ferries connect island to nearby islands Tao (Kao Tao) and Phangan (Koh Pha-Ngan), and also with continental Suratthani (Surat Thani). Also it is possible to reach island by train, a boat and the bus. Such package can be got in travel agencies. To move on island it is possible on tuk-tukah (on island them name songthaews), these are pickups with two benches which follow on certain routes, on road selecting and landing passengers, also there are some conditioned taxi. Also it is possible to lease a motorcycle, but roads on island not so good and the probability of failure is great.
